Straight staff vs bent Cross

The following story just about sums up the cultural problem between the Cross and Council staff as they apply their CBD-oriented 'tidy towns' agenda to a town of eccentrics -- as told to us yesterday.

Council staff wanted to remove a tree from outside a well-known flock of bats in the area. The Body Corporate didn't want it removed. At an on-site meeting, staff explained the tree needed to go because it was crooked. The somewhat glamorous chairperson of the BC replied to this effect: 'But daahling, we're all crooked here at the Cross!'

The Cross is not dead -- just being crushed, as one of our commenters posted, by a Sartor/Turnbull program vision for the place that doesn't even mention its nightlife or role as an entertainment centre.

The person who reckons not even 100s come to the Cross should sit -- as we did the other Saturday night -- in the Goldfish Bowl listening to a good rockin' trio and watching people and cars absolutely pour into the place. There is still a lot of goodwill for the Cross and, from a business standpoint, it is crazy to deny this and attempt to turn it into a suburban shopping centre.

The mix is there, it just needs the right yeast.

Forget Sartor/Turnbull they are long gone .The lack of vision belongs to this council. And we all know who they are.Don't we?

The Cross can never be a shopping centre. It was however a fantastic shopping venue in the 1970's with its mix of night time and daytime experiences.

Remember it was a fabulous place to go after dark. And just as fabulous to shop during the day.

Potts Point is starting to reflect what it was. Appartment blocks with the streets full of life at all times. The Cross was never ever a run down and seedy place at its most popular.

"Council staff wanted to remove a tree from outside a well-known flock of bats in the area"

Did the flock of bats live in the tree? And did they disturb the residents in the block of flats?

Council should remove the the flats and let the bats live in peace. The bats were here first: ask Clover.

I think the Council is crooked, forget the trees.

I did ask Clover and she said that the bats were here first. For a limited time, they could, if they found a suitable venue, such as Victoria Park re-establish themselves there. Providing that they did not disturb the residents.

Further more she would go down one night for a bat screeching ceremony to show her support. She said for two weeks only. After that they must return to the Cross.

I know the bats were outside a closed down flock shop in Darlinghurst Rd. And the council's tree policy would send you bats

The Kings Cross flocks are the most corrupt flocks in Australia.

Let's call for another Royal Commission !

The Cross I knew, people used to pour into the place every night. Not just Saturdays. Its so damned quiet since the hotels deserted the place its not worth visiting.

The Cross was once really classy. Yes classy. Full of intelligencia and artists. Its the people who visit the area which also contributed to its appeal.

I see a lot of them down at Fox studios.Yes Fox. Does anyone know where else they go now the arts community has deserted the 2011 area.

2011 has the highest proportion of writers & artists in Australia. Maybe you just know other people?

"2011 has the highest proportion of writers & artists in Australia".

Where can I find statistics of writers and artists by postcode?

Artists etc by postcode?? Admittedly I have been told that information -- by a few different people -- data from ABS census figures.
